The Story
Healthcare content carries a weight that most other industries don't — people are making decisions about their health based on what they read. A poorly worded article doesn't just lose engagement; it can genuinely mislead someone. When welUp brought me on to build their content strategy, this responsibility was front and center in everything I created.
welUp is a wellness platform that helps users track health metrics, find nearby healthcare providers, and access wellness resources. The existing content on the platform was sparse and overly clinical — written in a tone that felt like reading a medical textbook rather than getting advice from a trusted friend.
I started by conducting user interviews and analyzing app store reviews to understand what language real users were using. People weren't searching for 'hypertension management protocols' — they were asking 'why does my blood pressure spike when I'm stressed?' This gap between medical jargon and everyday language became the foundation of my content strategy.
I developed a content style guide specific to welUp that prioritized three principles: accuracy (every health claim was cross-referenced with WHO, NIH, or peer-reviewed sources), empathy (acknowledging that health concerns can be scary and validating the reader's feelings), and actionability (every article ended with concrete, implementable steps).
I created content across multiple formats — long-form blog articles on topics like seasonal wellness, nutrition basics, and mental health awareness; in-app tooltip copy that explained health metrics in plain language; push notification copy that encouraged healthy habits without feeling nagging; and social media posts that destigmatized health conversations.
The content team I worked with was small, so I also built templates and frameworks that allowed non-writers on the product team to contribute content that maintained our quality standards. I created a review checklist that covered medical accuracy, readability score (targeting Grade 8 reading level), SEO optimization, and brand voice consistency.
Over time, the content strategy shifted welUp's brand perception from 'just another health app' to a trusted wellness companion. User engagement with in-app content increased, and the blog became a significant organic traffic driver — with several articles ranking for competitive health-related search terms.
